McLaren has not made a single vehicle (for the track or the road) without some carbon fiber in it for over 40 years. And you just want to throw your heavy luggage in there? Not anymore.
The automotive brand has partnered yet again with TUMI to add its name to a capsule collection of luggage that incorporates a carbon fiber textile for lightness, strength, and, let’s be honest, the cool factor.
The collection is formed out of an existing collection of McLaren-branded TUMI items, a selection of which have been re-constructed out of Omniflex. Formerly known as CX6, the material “harnesses the high tensile strength and no-stretch characteristics of carbon fiber in an exceptionally flexible and lightweight form.”

Already used in a backpack sold by Porsche Design, as well as in fancy ski boots and cycling shoes, the material claims to be flexible, lightweight, strong, and durable. In this context, TUMI says that means its luggage is abrasion-resistant.
That has allowed the company to keep the sleek, charcoal finish of carbon fiber visible. The material has been used on the Aero International Expandable four-wheel carry-on suitcase, the Velocity backpack, the Torque Sling, and the Quantum Duffel, all of which come with leather trim detailing.
Prices for the new capsule collection, as you might have gathered from context, aren’t cheap. The Aero International 4 Wheeled Carry-on costs £2,425, ($2,749 USD at current exchange rates) while the Velocity Backpack costs £1,445 ($1,638 USD), and the Quantum Duffel is priced at £1,795 ($2,035 USD).
All of the pieces are now available through TUMI’s website and at global retail stores.
These two prove that they’re a lot more than posh mall crawlers when the road runs out.
